Cruising covered when Cruise Trip Extra added at an additional cost to the base policy.

What freely covers for cruise travel

Whether you're puttering around the Mediterranean or voyaging across the Canadian Arctic, cruises are a fabulous way to travel. To get coverage for ocean or sea going cruises outside of Australia that are longer than two nights (multi-night), you’ll need to add our Cruise Trip Extra to your plan (at an additional cost), from the day you board until the day you disembark.

COVID-19 cover

If you fall ill with COVID-19 before or on your trip, you may be able to claim the cost of additional accommodation and expenses because of it. Sub-limits and a special excess apply.

Onboard medical costs

With our Cruise Trip Extra, we may reimburse you for onboard medical or ship-to-shore medical expenses.

Unexpected additional expenses

If you encounter unexpected accommodation and/or transport costs during your travels because of a covered event, we may provide cover for the additional expenses you incur.

Remember:

To get cover on your multi-night ocean or seagoing cruise, it is mandatory to add our Cruise Trip Extra for all days you’re onboard, from the day you board to the day you disembark.

Find the right cover for your trip

All our overseas plans include medical expenses cover, your choice for trip cancellation cover and varying luggage cover limits as standard.

Need extra cover for your cruise trip?

Trip Extras let you build on your base policy, before you go or while you're away. Whether you want increased limits for your valuable items, extra cancellation cover, or pay-per-day cover for activities like skiing, motorcycle riding or cruising - just add what you need.

Now is the time to cruise

While river cruising is automatically included in our plans (both domestic and international), travellers hopping on an ocean or sea going cruise for more than two nights (multi-night) in international waters must add our Cruise Trip Extra to the base policy at an additional cost, from the day you board to the day you disembark.

Staying safe on your cruise

As a cruise passenger, there are many things you can do to make sure you stay in tip-top health for the duration of your journey. In the months leading up to leaving the shore, build up your immune system with diet, exercise and rest. If you have a chronic illness, check in with your doctor six-to-eight weeks before you set sail to check you are fit enough to travel, find out what vaccinations you may need and work out how you’re going to manage your medication.

Pack a little medical kit for minor ailments (think bandaids, burn cream, antiseptic ointment, antifungal cream and the like), and ask your doctor if there are any extra medications – such as antibiotics – that you might need to self-treat certain conditions. If you become unwell on the ship, seek medical advice immediately.

Top tips for cruising

Here are some helpful tips to consider ...

1

If you get seasick, take precautions

Seasickness is rarely a problem when you’re onboard a cruise ship due to their size and steadiness. However, if it’s something you’re prone to, ask if you can have a cabin on the lower level as close to the centre of the boat as possible. Refrain from having a heavy meal before you board the vessel for the first time, and avoid hitting the booze too hard. Your inner ear canal contains small crystals that are super sensitive to vibration and movement – and lying down to rest can help stabilise you if you feel dizzy or nauseous.

2

Be wary of infections onboard

Respiratory illnesses (such as influenza and COVID-19) and gastrointestinal infections are the most commonly reported illnesses onboard cruise ships. Be sure to wash or sanitise your hands regularly, which we should all be good at by now! The buffet can be a bit of a breeding ground for bugs, too – as they thrive in foods kept at room temperature. Let the medical staff onboard know immediately if you start to feel unwell.

3

Avoid sunburn and dehydration

Even standing on the deck when it’s cloudy can expose you to high levels of radiation – let alone frolicking on exotic beaches or strolling through local towns licking an ice-cream cone. Cover up with long-sleeved clothing and top up your sunscreen every couple of hours. To avoid dehydration, drink lots of water!
