Need extra cover for your student trip?

Build on your student travel insurance plan by adding Trip Extras to get pay-per-day cover for activities like skiing, motorcycle riding and adventure sports, as well as increased limits for your valuable items and extra cancellation cover.

Why consider travel insurance as a student?

The Australian Government website Smartraveller considers travel insurance “as important as a passport” if you’re heading overseas – and students are no exception!

If you get sick or injured while you’re overseas, the cost of medical treatment can be a real nightmare – this is especially true if you are somewhere with an expensive healthcare system. Travel insurance can provide a layer of protection against unexpected medical costs that may arise while abroad.

For students who like to travel with smartphones, cameras and laptops, travel insurance can also come in handy if those items are damaged or stolen while travelling, as well as other valuable belongings like passports.

Besides offering cover for things like medical incidents and damaged belongings, Freely gives travelling students 24-hour access to medical and emergency support and live chat with our customer support team, both accessible in just a few clicks when you have the Freely app downloaded to your phone.

What freely can offer student travellers

Freely is a travel insurance and safety app that provides cover for all sorts of sticky situations you might encounter when travelling or studying overseas, from medical emergencies to laptop theft.

Freely’s overseas plans offers unlimited medical expenses(cover will not exceed 12 months from onset of illness or condition), 24-hour medical and emergency assistance and telehealth access, with e-script capabilities in over 70 countries and across dozens of languages. Plus, with the Freely app, you’ll receive real-time safety alerts for your location.

Students travelling with Freely can also enjoy cover for their trip and belongings, live chat with our team, as well as the option to add extra cover for activities on-the-go, such as snow sports and moped rental, with our Trip Extras.

Please note, however, that university fees are not considered a travel expense under the policy and therefore aren’t covered.

Which activities does freely cover?

All Freely's plans automatically cover over 75 activities you might do when travelling or studying abroad.

These include abseiling, archery, ballooning, bungee jumping, flying fox, horse riding, jet and banana boating, sail boarding, off-road or 4WD driving (organised tour), mountain biking, jet skiing, kayaking, paragliding, parasailing, snorkelling, white water rafting, surfing, safari tours and scuba diving (up to 30 metres if diving with a diving school or qualified instructor).

If you want to take part in a higher-risk activity, we offer a range of pay-per-day Trip Extras that you can add to your base policy for the days you need extra cover. You can do this before you go or in real-time on your trip via the the Freely app. Once you’ve added and paid for a Trip Extra using the Freely app, your extra cover kicks in immediately.

For instance, our Snow Sports Trip Extra covers you for skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling. Our Adventure Activities Trip Extra extends our cover to things like triathlons, rock climbing, skydiving and trekking. If you’d like to ride a scooter or motorcycle overseas (even as a passenger), you will need to add our Motorcycle and Moped Riding Trip Extra in order to be covered.

Conditions and exclusions apply. Be sure to read our PDS to understand what’s covered.

A few hot tips for student travellers

Here are some helpful tips to consider ...

1

Make the most of student discounts

Often, being a student gives you access to cheaper deals on transport, tech, travel and even food. Use your student ID wherever possible!

2

Read the PDS before buying travel insurance

PDS stands for product disclosure statement. It’s a document that financial service providers (including travel insurance companies) publish so that customers fully understand what they’re purchasing. Freely’s PDS includes information about how our travel insurance policies work: the benefits, conditions and exclusions, as well as our complaints-handling procedure – among other things.

1

Stay in regular contact with someone

Give someone back home a detailed itinerary, and make a plan to keep in touch regularly. We suggest adding an emergency contact to your account in the Freely app too, so they can be reached if required.
