What freely covers for medical travel insurance

Getting sick or injured when you're travelling is a real pain, but having travel insurance can help take away some of the sting. Here are some features worth knowing about before your next trip.

Mental health

We can provide cover for several pre-existing mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety (provided you meet our criteria and haven't been hospitalised, required treatment or changed medication in the last 12 months).

Only applies to our overseas plans.

Overseas medical and dental expenses

If you get sick or injure yourself overseas, you may be able to claim unlimited medical expenses incurred overseas. Cover will not exceed 12 months from onset of illness or condition.

Existing medical conditions

Freely automatically provides cover for a range of existing medical conditions (subject to the criteria in the PDS). For conditions that don’t meet the criteria for auto cover or conditions that are not automatically covered, you can complete a health assessment at the same time you purchase your policy. If approved, an additional premium may apply.

Helpful Tip:
You can buy your policy when you’re already on your trip – but there is a three-day no-cover period (you are not covered for these days). That’s why it’s a good idea to buy in advance, which will also cover you for pre-trip cancellation benefits.
Remember:

Cover for medical and emergency dental expenses is only available in our overseas plans.

Find the right cover for your trip

All our overseas plans include medical expenses cover, your choice for trip cancellation cover and varying luggage cover limits as standard.

Why consider travel insurance with overseas medical cover?

Accidents happen, but accessing medical support overseas as a traveller can be difficult and expensive. From a dog bite in Sri Lanka to a reef cut in Fiji, doctor and hospital fees can be very high, especially if you don’t have medical coverage.

This is where travel insurance can come in handy. In fact, according to Australian government website Smartraveller, travel insurance is “as important as a passport” if you’re heading overseas.

For travellers who have purchased one of our overseas plans and who become sick or injured while on their trip, we may provide cover for unexpected medical and hospital expenses (cover will not exceed 12 months from onset of illness or condition).

Travelling with Freely also gives you 24-hour access to our team of medical and emergency specialists, as well as live chat with the Freely support team from 7am–7pm AEST/AEDT every day.

Terms and conditions apply. For more detail, please read the PDS.

Does freely offer cover for existing medical conditions?

Yes, we do. Some conditions are automatically covered (subject to the criteria outlined in the PDS) by our overseas plans, while others need to be approved and may carry an additional premium. There are also existing medical conditions that we may not cover at all.

To declare your existing medical conditions for a quote, follow the steps on our Existing Medical Conditions page.

Tips for buying travel insurance with medical cover

Here are some helpful tips to consider ...

1

Be sure to declare all of your existing medical conditions

When getting a quote, click ‘Yes’ when asked if you have any existing medical conditions. You’ll then be guided to complete the online health assessment, which will enable us to determine whether we can cover your existing medical condition or not.

2

Read the PDS before buying travel insurance

PDS stands for product disclosure statement. It’s a document that financial service providers (including travel insurance companies) publish so that customers fully understand what they’re purchasing. Freely’s PDS includes information about how our travel insurance policies work: the benefits, conditions and exclusions, as well as our complaints-handling procedure – among other things.

3

Think about what medical cover or assistance you might want

If you’re heading overseas, you might want to consider getting travel insurance that includes medical cover in case you get sick or injured. You may want to consider a policy that also includes access to medical and emergency assistance for when you’re overseas.

Why choose freely
