Planning to ride a scooter in Bali – as a driver or as a passenger? To get cover, you must add our Motorcycle and Moped Riding Trip Extra to your policy for all the days that you’re riding and meet the requirements set out in the PDS.

Medical cover for Bali

If you get sick or injured in Bali, the medical bills you rack up could be extensive. For example, treatment to prevent the rabies virus in the wake of a dog or monkey bite can cost hundreds of dollars and typically requires repeat hospital visits.

That’s why the Australian Government’s Smartraveller website considers travel insurance “essential if you end up sick or injured”, highlighting the fact that “medical assistance is usually the highest unexpected cost for Australians overseas”.

Our overseas plans include cover for overseas medical expenses for travellers in Bali (cover will not exceed 12 months from the onset of illness or condition). We also provide travellers with 24-hour access to medical and emergency assistance and telehealth, which may be helpful for navigating Bali’s health system when you’re unwell.

For more detail, be sure to read the PDS.

Am I covered for riding a scooter in Bali?

Freely offers cover for travellers who want to rent and/or ride a scooter in Bali, but only when you add our Motorcycle and Moped Riding Trip Extra to your base policy at an additional cost for all the days you’re riding – whether you’re driving or a passenger. You also need to meet a set of requirements in order to be covered.

As a general rule, regardless of the bike’s engine capacity, you must be wearing a helmet while you ride and you cannot be racing, participating in a professional capacity or doing motocross. If you’re a passenger, the person driving the bike needs to have a valid licence for riding that vehicle.

Please note that cover will not apply to claims arising from being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

To learn more about our Motorcycle and Moped Riding Trip Extra for your trip to Bali, be sure to read the PDS, which contains the conditions and exclusions that may impact or disqualify cover for moped and motorcycle riding.

Why do I need travel insurance for Bali?

Bali is one of Australia's most popular destinations for good reason - the beaches, the surf, the food, the culture. Australia has no reciprocal health agreement with Indonesia, so medical costs are your responsibility if you get sick or injured. Freely can help with overseas medical expenses, emergency assistance, trip cancellation and disruptions like flight delays or volcanic activity, depending on your plan and circumstances. Full terms and conditions are set out in the PDS.

Top tips for travelling in Indonesia

Here are some helpful tips to consider ...

1

Take steps to prevent traveller's diarrhoea or Bali belly

Don’t drink from the tap – stick to filtered or bottled water instead. Sanitise and wash your hands regularly. You can also take a natural probiotic like Travelan as a preventative supplement to get your guts in good shape before you go. If the worst happens and you succumb to the sickness, take activated charcoal tablets, stay hydrated and get plenty of rest.

2

Think about medical coverage for Bali

Bali is a paradise to relax in and explore, but accidents do happen. For example, a monkey or dog bite requires immediate, expensive and multi-day rabies treatment. For this reason, you might want to consider getting travel insurance with overseas medical cover should you need to go to the doctor or the hospital.

3

Consider extra cover if you’re riding a moped in Bali

If you plan on renting a moped or motorbike in Bali – or even riding one as a passenger – you need to add our Motorcycle and Moped Riding Boost to your base policy for all the days you’ll be on the bike in order to be eligible for cover. You also need to meet all the requirements set out in our PDS.
